David Purley was a British racing driver who competed in Formula One from 1973 to 1977. He was born on January 26, 1945, in Bognor Regis, England, and started his racing career in Formula Three before moving up to Formula One with the LEC team.
Purley is best known for his heroic actions during the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, where he tried to rescue fellow driver Roger Williamson from his burning car after a crash. Despite his efforts, Williamson tragically lost his life in the accident. Purley was awarded the George Medal for his bravery in attempting to save Williamson.
Purley's career in Formula One was not particularly successful in terms of results, but he was known for his fearless driving style and determination. He scored one championship point in his career with a sixth-place finish at the 1977 Monaco Grand Prix.
Tragically, Purley lost his own life in a plane crash in 1985 while attempting to fly solo from Bognor Regis to the Isle of Wight. He was just 40 years old at the time of his death. David Purley is remembered as a brave and talented racer who made a lasting impact on the sport of Formula One.
